Homes For Humans

Reducing Electrical Usage

Consuming less electricity has immediate payback for our environment, while also reducing energy bills, as it's the biggest source of power for our homes. Did you know that for every kWh used, another 2.2 are lost during generation and delivery? Reducing electrical consumption will also go a long way towards reducing our carbon footprint and our dependency on fossil fuels. Try implementing these measures.

  • Replace incandescent lighting with Compact Fluorescents, LED lights, and/or daylighting: The old, reliable, incandescent light wastes 90% of its energy as heat.
  • Turn off unnecessary lighting: Or install motion sensors
  • Turn off unused electrical appliances: This will eliminate the main source of electrical draw, but may leave "phantom loads" behind.
  • Unplug unused electrical appliances: They won't consume any electricity that way.
  • Use a Smart Strip at each TV and computer station: Even when you think it's turned off, your TV or VCR or computer can burn as much power in a year through "phantom loads" as when on.
  • Clean your refrigerator coils twice a year. Your refrigerator will perform better while using less power.
  • Wash clothes in cold water.
  • Clean the dryer lint filter between loads.  Your dryer will breath a little easier.
